Evaluation activity

We have used Blogger for all our media work and the lead up to our films including props, costumes, treatment anything that was important it was posted on here. This was how we kept updated with coursework and the planning in our film. Blogger was the centre of our film information it had everything we needed on it so that we could constantly look at what we still had to do.

We had to upload our final video to youtube and this took a few attempts but it came out ok apart from it had Premier elements written across the screen as this was the only way that it would upload from that system, that took a lot more attempts then we hoped for.

We had to use the schools system of premier elements rather movie maker as it had some great effects that we managed to incorporate in our film. I would say that Premier elements is an ok system to use hoever it does crash a lot and that could be because we had a high resolution footage but we lost our work a couple of times due to us not saving and that it crashing. We had problems uploading the film due to the crashes and this made the process slower than normal.

We used the schools computer to upload our film and this was rather slow as our film was being processed because we had so much footage to sort out. It imported the footage fine and was an excellent quality when on screen however when we put it in premier elements the sloweness of the computer made it hard to fit everything together. Although this occured our film came out great.

This was the tripod we used in our filming process it was easy to handle and had no problem. We decided to use Bekky's tripod rather than the schools as we found it was more simple and accurate to use as the transition of the pan was smooth.

This is the camera we used for the filming and it had a clear viedo image. The camera being light was easy to handle and we found no faults with the camera when using it. The camera was a suitable size and could film every shot we needed including a wide shot. The editing process for the camera was slow because we had a lot of highe definition footage.

The fourth screen shot shows some camera work and editing that we did/used. (When Danielle dies by having a bottle shoved down her throat we had to carefully edit the shots we took together to make them link as though the bottle was going down her throat)

The fifth screen shot shows the genre and how the oepning suggests it. (When Mark has been killed a shot of haha above him shows the killer does not care)

The sixth screen shot shows the story and how the oepning sets it up. (Very first shot of Mark and Dominic clearing up from a previous party sets the time of about the evening when only they should be around cleaning)

The seventh screen shot shows how the characters are introduced. (When Danielle appears in the door way walking towards Mark holding a bottle of wine showing she is a teenage girl who is slightly drunk)

The eighth screen shot shows the special effects that we have used. (When the clown goes all blurry this was to demonstrate Daniell's vision as she is drunk)

The ninth screen shot shows the style font and choice for our title. (This is the same as the first screen shot to show the choice and style that we chose to suit our film genre)

Evaluation activity - What we could have improved

1) In the background of one of our scenes you can see the equipment and props needed for the rest of the film. However we only noticed during editing but it looks like some random stuff left over from the party.

2) We could have made sure that we were checking the time limits for the each scene as we were only allowed a max of two minutes, we had to cut out a lot of footage to make the opening exactly two minutes.

3) In the scene where Dominic walks past Danielle we did two shots rather then one straight pan of him. In our film we only panned once and it was cut due to too much footage so bad us!

Mr. Thornton is a media teacher and so he would want to be updated with recent films, whether or not they are his favourite genre. This is not to say he would neccesarily enjoy our film; he would lend a critical approach to viewing it. However his age range is ideal and his music preference hints that he could enjoy it. Horror is basically drama with gore and silly scares anyway.

. Makes light of a situation knows how to brighten a mood

. Manages to avoid killer until a good way through the film (Randy died in the sequel)
. The nerd a friend of one of the main characters




Dom vs High School Musical's Chad

Similarities:
. The main guy's best friend (secondary character)

Differences:
. More realistic appearance of a teen than Chad
. Not 'the cool' guy
. Less focus on 'masculine' activities (e.g. basketball)

Danielle vs Scream's Tatum

Similarities:
. Sluttish in the way they dress
. Drinks a lot of alcohol
. Is romantic with boyfriend in the film and is evry close to him
. Dresses revealingly wants to appeal to the male gender(example - for her boyfriend)
. Goes somewhere alone where she gets killed

Differences:
. Danielle's boyfriend gets killed
. Tatum's boyfriend is the killer





Danielle vs High School Musical's Gabriella

Similarities:
. The main girl character
. Girlfriend of the main guy character

Differences:
. Much more sluttish
. Gabriella is 'perfect' stereotpical girl who is innocent . Danielle is a more realistic representation
. Focuses on the bad points of teens rather than the good

Mark vs Scream's Stu

Similarities:
. They are both one of the main characters
. Lost in the 90s ( The way he acts and dresses etc)
. Always cracking jokes and is up for a laugh
. Has a girlfriend in the film that he is close to
. Very sure of himself and knows what he is good at ( Sonny's line ...'Get in' )

Differences:
. Stu turned out to be the killer
. Mark is a good guy who dies.





Mark vs High School Musical's Troy

Similarities:
. One of the main guy characters
. The 'cool' kid

Differences:
. Mark dresses more how the average teen would
. Troy is more 'Barbie doll Ken' good looks
. Mark shows you don't have to be the sporty type to be cool (dismisses the 'jock' stereotype)

Screen shots

Our film starts with a two-shot with Mark in the background and in the left third of the shot. Dom is in the foreground and based more to the right third but his hands in the middle third to symbolise that he is sweeping the floor but has stopped to continue his conversation with Mark. We used the 180 degree rule and made sure that we never filmed on the right side of the hall. The door was our imaginary line so we knew that we couldn't cross it. Our opening shot shows the setting clearly as you see a good view of the hall. This gives the audience an understanding that the guys have just had a party and our clearing up it lets the audience know the surrounding area. As Dom has the very first line in our film we had him more in the foreground as he introduces the time, place and previous events that have gone on. ' Why am i helping clean up your party'.

The next shot is of Danielle who enters in the left third through the door we saw in the first shot. This creates mystery as although she is in the foreground it is blurred and you can only just make out the wine bottle she is holding. This gives the audience an image that carry's on during the film that she is a drinker. As the background is clear you can see the guys play fighting in the background continuing their bickering in the action before. This shot creates mystery for the audience as they can't tell who the character is and what signifficance she has to the scene and film.





The next shot goes back to a similar two-shot like before but the characters Mark and Dom are more in a close-up view. This shows the audeince their reaction to Danielle coming in and Mark is more in the foreground to show dominance and suggests that he is more involved with Danielle then Dom. By the close up of the characters you can tell that they are puzzled as to why Danielle is still at the party drinking.




This shot is a point of view shot from the character Mark, this shows Danielle's full outfit from her crop top to the ugg boots. This is also a long shot as you can see the whole of Danielle entering and this is the first time you see her fully. The audience can now see that she is a stereotypical representation of a teenage girl at a party.






Again another two-shot of Mark and Dom but this time at a slight angle than the previous shots. We did this shot so that Dom can pick up the tray and we could still see Mark in the shot. This was a much better and smoother shot then having to pan the camera only slightly. This shot also captures Dom playfully hitting Mark in the arm.





Dom then transitions from the foreground to the background as he walks past Danielle. This allows us to show his exit, whilst also showing Danielle's attitude towards him. It is obvious they are not keen on each other since Dom doesn't acknowledge her, and she gives him evils as he passes. She also stays still as he passes, showing her dominance. She only moves once he has gone.






Danielle moves into a two shot with Mark, showing both of their facial expressions. Their closeness hints that they are boyfriend and girlfriend, which is confirmed when they kiss. Notice that we have not once shown the wall behind the camera, because it would be obstructing the 180 degree rule.




We then used an over the shoulder shot to show Danielle saying "Meet me in the bathroom". Since she has all the screen time in this shot, with none of the focus on Mark, it shows her dominance. As she turns around in this shot she picks up the wine, keeping up the drunk image, and walks away very confidently.





For the same reasons as above, the shot of her walking away also has her in the foreground. In this shot she stumbles slightly, showing that she is definitely not sobre. Mark is left to pick up the brooms. We had to ensure that throughout all these scenes the brooms were in the same position they dropped them in at the begining to keep continuity.






Danielle stumbles into the bathroom, and as she opens the door it is clear to the audience that is where she has gone due to the tap and mirror. We decided at this point to introduce the killer, but not fully. Similar to how we introduced Danielle, we had the clown move into the right third as an over the shoulder shot. This makes it seem as though he is stalking Danielle.






At this point we chose to change back to Mark, since the audience would be expecting to see what happens to Danielle. It leaves them wondering. We had him walk into the shot from the right, to show he is coming from having picked up the brooms in the middle of the room, and places them to the left of the shot. We took this opportunity to include a comedic "yes!" expressing his pleasure at Danielle's invitation.




Finally you see the clown peeking round the corner of the door, which comes as a surprise since the audience are expecting the clown to have gone after Danielle, not Mark. Mark is in the foreground, but is blurred and facing away from the camera, showing that he is most certainly not the most dominant character in this shot.





This is a point of view shot from the clown looking at Mark. This view makes Mark look vulnerable since he is on his own in a large room. It is also one of those moments where the audience is screaming at the characters not to go any closer. Mark, like most victims in horror films, is completely stupid.




This is a walking point of view shot from Mark, which emphasises his stupidity. Who would go any closer to that thing?!?!




We used this camera shot to show Danielle drinking whilst waiting for Mark to come into the bathroom, little does she know that the killer is after Mark.

In this shot we had the camera showing the Knife as if the killer was stabbing Mark and blood splatting everywhere. This was to give the audience the indication of the killing without actually showing the footage leaving it to the audience to imagine it.

We revealed Marks body like this because it shows the audience what the clown has just done and the haha by him shows that the clown is heartless.


Danielle is in the foreground with the clown slowly creepy up behind. We did this shot as it is a turn around moment where the audience are like she is gunna die next. This shot shows that Danielle thinks that the figure behind her is Mark when in fact it is the killer.




This is a point of view shot of Danielle, which is blurred to show how drunk she is. To do this we used an effect called ghosting, and we moved the camera around as if her eyes were trying to focus.

With the clown in the foreground it shows the demand that he has to kill others and the dominance that he has. Danielle is shown as vulnerable and portrays a lack of control from being drunk.

The close up of the bottle of wine highlights that the thing Danielle clinged onto so tightly during the rest of the film is now the thing killing her. It's kind of an irony; paying for your sins. She drinks underage and so this is what she gets.




This isn't so much of a close up as the others, because we wanted to show all the details, from the blood to the empty bottle. It's quite a shocking image and we thought it turned out really well.

Finished filming and now Editing

We finished filming on the 15th of January and we are now editing the two minutes. On the filming day everything went to plan we knew what shots we were taking and what the scene should look like. We filmed every scene twice at different angles so that when it came to editing we could see what angle best suited the scene. We filmed on two days so that the time of day was right for each scene on the saturday we filmed the party/ death scenes as it was in the evening, on the sunday we filmed the morning scenes however due to having too much footage these clips will be in the deleted scenes.

Unfortunately i was ill with a chest infection on the first day of editing so Bekky was left to start it. However Bekky texted me at certain points throughout to let me know what she had done and how long it was. We are still editing the film now but have almost finished so we are on track. We have added the music and made sure that it is exactly 2 minutes, the title is inlcuded in the right font colour and style. Once we have completely finished editing we are going to put some deleted scenes on the blog and behind the scenes action, we are also including interviews with the actors.

Mask for clown

The clown mask cost £13.50 including postage, we are now going to have a look in charity shops to complete the costume and cut it up making the clown look more scary. The clown mask has black mesh to cover the eyes but we are also going to cover the clowns eyes in black make-up underneath so that with the lighting you can't see the normal eyes.

Preliminary task

For our preliminary task we were told to use the 180 rule, match on action and shot/reverse shot. The clip had to include someone walking through a door and having a conversation, we chose to do an interview scene where i walked in and answered questions. We used match on action when i walked through the door first shot of me holding the handle and the pushing it open. Shot/reverse shot was used during the dialogue scene between me and Kellie. The 180 rule was used throughout the clip we made sure to stick to that imaginary line we made.

The 180 rule is where you stick to a certain line on the floor and the camera does not move over that line during the clip. Every shot taken must be from behind that line. Match on action is where you have a long shot of someone reaching for somehting and then a close up of them either pushing the object or opening something for example a door. Shot/reverse shot is used in dialogue scenes where you focus on the person saying a line moving to each chartacter during the scene.

In our 2 minute film clip that we are making we will always make sure that we never go over the line and constanytly remember the 180 rule. We will use the shot/reverse shot during the dialogue scenes for example the scene witht the clown and Mark. Match on action will be used when Mark and Danielle kiss and when Dominic enters the kitchen.
