Scary Movie 4 opening

In the opening two minutes of Scary Movie 4 you can immediately tell that the genre is horror. You can tell this because a basketball player is in a dingy and eerie bathroom, where you get an alarming sense of danger. As he turns to walk away he is stopped by a chain which is tightly locked on his ankle, the main character who you think is the killer by his voice starts threatening him to stay where he is. Although you don't see the killer which i think makes the audience anticipate where abouts he is in the bathroom and what he is going to do next, it is effective how you only hear his voice and see the characters reaction this adds more tension and raises the sense of insecurity for the audience.
As the opening continues some of the anticipations that the audeince feel bcome answered, the lights go up and you assume the killer will be their but it is DR . PHIL sitting chained in the bathroom. When the camera pans around to a television screen, the saw killer comes on screen to say what will happen to them if they don't escape, they only have so long to live and the camera takes a shot at an airvent which is letting in poisonous gas. The audience now feel the trepedation in both characters as they have to fight for their lives. The auideince will now have questions such as 'How will they escape?', 'Will one survive'. All of these questions will be answered throughout the film.
The target audience for this film is 15 and above you know this because murders take place and people get trapped, it is not suitable for anyone under that age because it may scare them and cause nightmaires. This is a good film opening to a horror because it includes everything that a good horror opening should have such as :
  1. Inlcuding a character that is trapped but this adds more interest by having two people trapped. This adds more excitement to the viewers and more questions can be asked about who the killer is, because although a killer came on the screen you wonder if he is the real one talking or more then one person is the killer.
  2. First opening scene set in a mysterious and dull room this adds atmosphere to the scene as you think of ways that they could espcape and how long they have.
  3. Not actually seeing the killer but informing you that he is watching makes the audeince feel connected with the characters, as they become aware of the perilous situation that can cost their life.

The opening two minutes achieves everything that a good horror film should as it grabs the attention of the target audience and explains what the situation is between the killer and the victims. It also leaves the audience wanting to carry on because they want to know who the killer is and how the film will introduce him properly.
