Opening scene to Van Helsing

Van Helsing is one of my favourite films because it intrigues the audience from the moment you put it starts, it introduces the main character in the first few minutes and uses a variety of camera shots and mise - en -scene to display the atmposhere and mood of the characters. Van Helsing has many genre's such as ; Action, Drama and adventure however i also think that it could be classed as a childrens horror as it is about vampires. You can tell that it is an adventure as you are taken into the world of Van Helsing consisting of Vampires and Mr Hyde. During the scene many camera shots are used to focus on the different characters that show you Van Helsing's killing side. The first part of the clip is missing but it tells you about the main vampire count dracula and his new project that has escaped from his lab. At the start of this clip it is very dark and mysterious with some bouncy music in the background to contradict the feeling of being a killer. You see a close-up of a man who you immediatly think is Van Helsing, he is walking down a eeary alley into a street in the background you see the clock tower and get a sense of danger. Inside the clock tower you can see that their is some danger involved in what Van Helsing does but as he is the main character you know that he will survive. The audience will anticipate some danger but they won't know when or what it will be, their is a P.O.V shot which shows you his perspective and what he is seeing all of sudden Mr Hyde pops down from the ceiling and makes you jump, i think this adds extra effect for the audience as it makes you wonder why he is their and what will happen next. You get the feeling that Mr Hyde is killer and will attempt to kill him which is exactly what happens however the audience will be thinking of ways that Van Helsing can kill him so it leaves questions for the audience to answer as the scene progresses.

Vanhelsing uses many of the Key Features for a good movie opening such as :-

- Showing the audience the main characters and some of the things that he will face later on in the film.
- Creating atmoshere and tension for the audience by leaving them with questions and eeary feelings of what will happen.
- Portraying the genre's of the film throught the first scene with the adventure into the tower.
- Clearly represents who some of the main people are with hints of what they do for a living and what they want to succeed later on.
