Pirates of the carribean is mainly aimed at teenagers but it attracts and older audience as well, it is rated 12 aThe opening to Pirates of the Carribean contains man features that make a good opening, it shows tha audience the main characters and introduces the main theme of the film ' Pirates ', as it starts with an image of a boat floating in with the tide rippling underneath this shows that it is travelling with speed but their could be pirates or soldiers on board. As it gets into view the camera does a close-up of a little girl singing 'Yo-Ho, YO-HO a pirates life for me' however it is ssoldiers on deck rather than Pirates. The audeince are now given the opportunity to meet some of the characters involved in the plot and anticipate when the pirates will enter and what they will look like. Their is a contrast at the beginning between two characters a man who is a worker sailing with the soldiers and a little girl. The man says that cursed pirates sail on the seas and so the audience get a feeling that he isn't fond of them and would rather stay clear of them, however the little girl says that 'I think it would be rather excting to meet a pirate', this shows that she is not scared and lives a risky life.
The scene then zooms into a man spotting someone on a piece of wood floating next to the boat, the little girl is intrigued and thinks that it is a pirate however it's a normal man who was on a boat that has mysteriously caught fire and burnt. The audeince get the feeling that pirates are involved even though they have not seen them yet. You find out that the girls name is Elizabeth and so the audince know that she will have some significance in the film later on.
In the opening two minutes you don't see the pirates this could be good and bad because it leaves the audience to anticipate what they look like and how they speak but it also makes them intrigued to carry on watching to find out, however it could be bad because most oepnigns show you the main characters and although this one shows some of them the audience would want to see the major one. So it could have a negative effect as it may make some audience memebers think that it was a poor opening.
